Coimbatore to Rameshwaram – A Southern Weekend Sojourn

Coimbatore is a strategically located city – close to the highest mountains of South India and good drives away from both coasts. Coimbatore to Rameshwaram by car is a 375 km journey that cuts across the heartland of Tamil Nadu. Rameshwaram is in a part of South-East India where the sub-continent tapers off into the ocean and Sri Lanka forms at a distance.

Enroute one can make a stop at Madurai, the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. A stop at Madurai must include a delicious meal as the local cuisine is celebrated across the country. Another attraction, of course, is the Meenakshi Temple. Rameshwaram too has always been a significant region in terms of historical and spiritual importance. There are many cultural attractions in Rameshwaram that attract curious travelers and pilgrims from all over.

Temples on the Edge of India

Sri Ramanathaswamy temple

Arguably the most famous temple in this part of India, the Sri Ramanathaswamy temple is famous for its pillared corridor, the second longest in the world. Some of the other highlights at the temple are the sacred ponds. It is possibly one of the most picturesque temples in India, and a lot of it because of the magnificent seaside backdrop. Kothandaramaswamy temple is built on some old ruins that are part of the legend of the Ramayana. The many gopurams here are a great example of quintessential Dravidian temple architecture. One can spend days just charting the different characters and motifs sculpted on these towers and deciphering the symbolism of it all.

Coastal Attractions

Spirituality and landscape are woven together in Rameshwaram. The Agni Teertham is one such example. It is a part of the sea that is close to the Rameshwaram temple and is usually dotted with boats. The pureness of Ariyaman Beach will astound many who associate Rameshwaram with large crowds. Clear waters and gentle currents make this a perfect stage for a romantic rendezvous.

Another way to escape the crowds is to head over to a ghost town. Dhanuskodi was a thriving centre before a 1964 storm destroyed but that abandonment has created a desolate and rather alluringly beautiful place. Limestone shoals that jut out of the ocean, Adam’s Bridge is another famous natural attraction in Rameshwaram.

Travel to Rameshwaram in Style and Comfort

To enjoy this epic journey in the most comfortable and private manner many informed travellers are opting for a Coimbatore to Rameshwaram car rental. In a self drive rental, one enjoys complete privacy and total control over the pace of the journey. Impromptu stops and detours just add to the fun and the journey is enriched with more cultural experiences.

App-based platforms like Zoomcar allow registered users to book a vehicle in a matter of seconds. One can choose from a wide selection of hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs. Assurances also include 24/7 on-road support.

The journey to the edge of India will always be a very memorable one. Soak in the sights and sounds and explore the dramatic coastline with total independence behind the wheel.
