1. Put on a smiling face

Taking medication is like every other thing you like your kid to do therefore, you need to act happy. Make it an enjoyable moment for your kids. Be careful because they can easily detect bad body language, negative tone, hash words, and many more. Discover a pattern or ways that can help ease the stress and frustration that comes with giving medicine to your kid.

2. Add some flavor

Before your kid receives medication from the pharmacy, ask about its taste and check if the pharmacist can add some flavor if the medicine has a bitter or sour taste. Flavors such as cherry, banana, watermelon, and others help eliminate the bitter taste of medicine. You can also allow your kids to choose their favorite flavor if they are old enough. This makes the experience fun for them and also helps with control issues.

3. Reward your kids

Nothing is so interesting and satisfying for kids other than receiving rewards for being obedient. Every kid likes being rewarded and it keeps them motivated and happy. Make your kids feel special by giving them something when they take their medicine. For example, you can create a sticker and give them each time they use their medicine. Then decide how many stickers then need to win a prize.

4. Choose the best formulation

Medications come in different formulations. Some come in chewable form, pills that can be broken into smaller pieces for easy swallow. Others come in capsule form which can be opened and spindles on the food, and liquid that can be mix with flavors. Ask your pharmacist about the formulations available for kids’ medication and choose the easiest formulation for them.

5. Tell your kid the truth

Never liar to your kid about the taste of their medications. Just be honest with them and let them know the benefits of the medications in their body especially when they are sick. Do not refer to the medications as candies. This is because they can go behind your back to use it which can lead to overdose. Appeal to their sense of reasoning and tell them they will feel better after taking the medications.

6. Mix it with food

A medication taste can be disguised by mixing it with certain food. This includes pancakes, cereals, soup, yogurt, chocolate syrup, and many more. You can also put the medication in a spoon and add their favorite ice cream on top. This way the first thing they taste is the ice cream and they will also swallow the medication before they realize the taste difference.
