Defending Champions Chennai Super Kings Out of IPL 2022 After a Disappointing Batting Show

After losing the 12th match against Mumbai Indians in this season’s IPL, Chennai Super Kings‘ era came to an end. It was still conceivable for them to qualify for the Playoffs before this match if the odds remained in their favor, but miracles no longer happen. From the start of this IPL season, the CSK has struggled.

Previously, Ravindra Jadeja was the captain of Chennai Super Kings, who lost six out of eight matches before handing over the captaincy to MS Dhoni (former Captain of CSK). Even that didn’t work for them, as they went on to lose two more matches under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, and are now out of the IPL for the season.

Chennai Super Kings have previously won the IPL four times and hold the greatest victory percentage of 64.83 percent, however, they failed to even qualify for the Playoffs this season.

Mumbai Indians defeated CSK by 5 wickets in the 59th match played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on May 12, 2022. After winning the toss, Mumbai chose to bowl first.

The Chennai Super Kings got off to a bad start as they lost the opener, David Conway, early in the match. David Conway wanted to review the decision but couldn’t since the DRS system was unavailable due to a power outage. For this irresponsible action, neither the BCCI nor the Mumbai Cricket Association has issued an official statement.

From the start of the game, Chennai Super Kings started losing wickets one by one, scoring only 97 runs in 16 overs. Captain MS Dhoni was the only player who made it to the conclusion. MS Dhoni scored an unbeatable 36 runs off 33 balls, including four fours and two sixes.

With only 5 wickets lost, Mumbai Indians chased down the goal set by Chennai Super Kings in 14.5 overs. Tilak Varma scored an unassailable 34 and 16 runs to win the match. Mumbai Indians are still out of the season with only 6 points after a poor performance earlier in the season, but with this win, they ensured that CSK are also out.
