Plumbing issues sneak up on you anytime and put you in panic mode. Next thing you know, you are trying to fix the problem while also trying to focus on your daily routine. If the issue is a leak, it is more time-sensitive. Water leaks are problematic because they take over space and create a mess. Leaving these leaks unattended invites other problems like moss and fungal growth in your house.

Simple leaks like tightening a knob do not require professional assistance. After you have identified the issue, you can attend to it, and the leakage will be fixed. However, serious leaks require in-depth inspection by a professional.

Here are some situations where you need professional assistance to diagnose a leak:

  • Splash leaks in the shower area which cause water to gather in the washroom
  • Bathtub leaks and disappearing tile caulk
  • Tiles coming to lose behind the sink and seeping water
  • Water seeping from under the toilet seat
  • Stains on the ceiling below the toilet
  • Dampness inside the kitchen sink cabinet due to long-term leak
  • Loose faucet base or leaky pipes
  • Sink drain overspill

These are complex situations, and it is better to leave them at the hands of a professional plumber. They are experts in their jobs and also have years of experience under their belt.

They can tell by inspection whether the leak will take a few hours or days to be fixed. How long will a leak take to be fixed depends upon how early it is detected. If it is identified soon, it may take a few hours to fix it.

However, if leakage has been there for a long time, there is a possibility that it has damaged the structure or pipes. In this case, it might take a few days to fix the entire problem.

In order to find out how long it will take, let’s start from the moment you contact service for repairs.

Determine the issue

Once you call and book the service, the customer service representative will ask you about the problem. You should describe the issue in detail so that they can send the best person for the job.

If the leakage is due to bursting pipes and requires immediate assistance, the company should send someone within a few hours. If they are not in a position to send someone in a few hours, look for another service in your area.

Wait times for plumber

In case of a slow leakage that doesn’t require an urgent fix, you can book an appointment for the next day. It is based on the service speed of the company you choose. Some companies have an instant-service model, whereas others deploy a first-come-first-serve model.

Detection and Repair

We attempt to fix minor leaks in the house that take little time. If the leakage is severe, you need someone to come in and detect the issue.

After booking the plumbing service, a person will visit your house and inspect the cause of the leak. In case of a big leak, you might need a pipe replacement or some reconstruction.

This process can take several hours to a couple of days. Getting the tiles out, fixing the leak, and then putting the tiles back on is not a swift job. In some cases, it takes even more time for a water leak repair because:

Re-piping the house:

In case of a slab leak, the entire house needs a plumbing system replacement. A professional decides if they have to replace one pipe or the entire system.

Opening the foundation:

If the leak is not emanating from any external pipe, it is probably coming from a concealed pipe. In this case, plumbers have to dig deep in the plumbing to see where the leakage is occurring.

How long will it take?

By now, you must have a clear idea that the time depends entirely on the state of the damage. Based on the condition of the leak and the repair method, your plumber will tell you a deadline. Sometimes you have to call the plumber again because the leakage finds its way back.

You must keep monitoring the new repair for any further signs of leakage or discolored paint. Many people take a sigh of relief when the 4-day after-service period concludes.

However, the leaks do return, and you have to go through the same drill again. Make sure that the plumbers are 100% satisfied with their work and use all the strategies to fix the leak issue for it never to return.

Hire the right service

An experienced plumber can manage to do more work in less time. That’s why you must hire the right professional for the job. We suggest choosing a service that is recommended by your friends or family members.

You can also lookup testimonials online and choose a company with the best ratings and testimonials. We hope that this blog helped you create a plan in your mind to seek for the right plumbing service.

  • Thanks for helping me understand the importance of having plumbing repairs fixed right away. I had leaky pipe issues yesterday in the kitchen sink and I am worried that it might take a toll on the water bill, which is why I’d like to find a plumber. I had no idea that the fixing process may take several hours or a couple of days depending on the severity of the damage. With that said, I am hoping to find a local service that I can call immediately.

  • It’s interesting to know that some leaks may be too severe that re-piping might have to be done. I’m interested in looking for plumbing assistance soon because I recently found a leak in one of the pipes in my basement. Perhaps it would be best to address that now instead of observing it further.

Thank you for setting my expectations about how long leaks take to fix. We can’t have any of these things happening during the holidays, so I can see the benefit of scheduling enough time to let the plumbers do their work. While we’re still relatively free, I’ll call up a plumber so they can find and fix any leaks that might come up during the holidays.
