During an interview with Walt Disney Co’s ABC network on Thursday 6th April 2023, Jeremy Renner, the actor best known for his role as Hawkeye in Marvel’s Avengers movies, opened up about a snowplow accident in the Reno area in Nevada that left him with multiple broken bones, a collapsed lung, and a pierced liver.

Concern for his Nephew

Renner had been using the snowplow to pull one of his family’s trucks out of the snow, but when it started skidding on the ice he was worried about his nephew Alex who’d just unhooked the chains. Renner, who was driving the vehicle, stuck one foot out to look back at Alex and failed to set the parking brake.

A Painful Fall

Renner then lost his footing and fell out of the cab. In a wheelchair during the interview, Renner explained to ABC that operating a vehicle while being outside of it is not safe, comparing it to driving a car with one foot out. The snowplow then ran over him, causing over 30 broken bones, a collapsed lung, and a pierced liver.

Supportive Neighbors

Neighbors who found Renner after the accident described him as having a crack in his skull, shallow breathing, and blood all around him. After the accident, the actor gestured to his family, apologizing “Sorry.” Renner had surgery to fix his broken ribs and they put metal in his legs and face. He’s been doing therapy every day to get better from his injuries.

Positive Outlook

Despite his injuries, Renner is maintaining a positive outlook and is grateful for the support he has received from his family. During the interview, Renner credited their love and support with helping him through the ordeal. He is slated to return to Hollywood on Tuesday at a red-carpet event for his TV series, Rennervations on April 12.

ABC Airs 911 Call and Jeremy Renner Recalls Details of Snow Plow Accident

During an interview with ABC, Jeremy Renner described the excruciating pain and his memories of the incident. In the same interview, ABC played the 911 call made the morning of the accident. In the audio clip, Renner’s neighbor, Rich Kovach, can be heard saying that Renner had been crushed and begging for immediate assistance. Kovach described Renner as being covered in blood and having a skull that looked like it was “cracked wide open.” In the interview, Renner recalls the pain and the feeling of being on asphalt and ice.

Renner also remembers seeing stars and his eye being pushed out. Emergency responders took 20 minutes to reach Renner, who had more than 30 broken bones throughout his body. Renner communicated with them when his family arrived through sign language and conveyed his regret and sorrow, saying “I’m sorry.”

Renner stayed positive despite his injuries, crediting his family for helping him recover. In the interview, he was seen using a walker and wheelchair to get around. He wouldn’t let the accident haunt him; instead, he focused on the strength he gained from it. He didn’t want to be seen as a victim and refused to let it be a negative experience.

How is Jeremy Renner Doing: Leaning on His Family for Support

Renner chatted with Diane Sawyer about his recovery and how his family’s been there for him all the way. He’s gone through some intense surgeries, like having his rib cage rebuilt with metal, getting metal plates put in his eye socket, and having rubber bands and screws inserted into his jaw.

While he recovered, Renner’s family stayed by his side, and the actor said their support was invaluable.

Despite dealing with immense pain and difficulty sleeping, Renner remained committed to his recovery, earning “wonderful little victories” along the way. He hopes to regain sensitivity in parts of his body that he’s lost and is relearning how to speak after breaking his jaw.

Renner credited his family and his “Avengers” peeps with helping him through the recovery process. He also received support from his chiropractic sports physician, who described him as “motivated to heal.” Renner said he has no ego about a stuntman taking over his stunts in future projects.

Renner’s ultimate goal is to be walking the next time he appears on the red carpet. He said that his family’s love and support, along with his own mental strength, have helped him make progress in his recovery every day.
