How to Become a More Outdoorsy Person

There are tons of benefits to becoming a more outdoorsy person. It gives you a hobby, it improves your mental and physical health, it gets you in touch with nature, and so much more. Unfortunately, with the average lifestyle being so busy and tech-focused these days, many people find they don’t have the time or energy to get outside enough.

With the right habits, though, you can become the outdoor enthusiast you’ve always dreamed of being. Here is how.

Start Going Camping

Instead of booking a four-star hotel and lounging around the pool on your next vacation, decide to go camping instead. It might not be as luxurious as a mimosa on a balcony, but it will allow you to explore the outdoors in a truly natural way. Plus, it’s lots of fun! You’ll learn skills, bond with the people you’re with, and enjoy the fresh, crisp air that only comes from places far from the city.

If you want to become a regular camper, invest in some high-quality camping gear and a good, spacious vehicle. Look for a roomy Tesla for sale for plenty of space to pack your belongings.

Pick Up an Outdoor-Based Hobby

A great way to get outdoors is to take up an outdoor-based hobby. Luckily, there are plenty of them. If you want to get out onto the water, you could take up surfing, parasailing, or open-water swimming. If you’d prefer a hobby that gets you into trees and up mountains, hobbies like bird watching or botany are perfect.

Active hiking cruises are a wonderful way to both take time away from the daily grind and start a new hobby. While on a cruise, you can enjoy the scenery around you as you’ll physically challenge yourself with hikes of varying levels. It’s an excellent opportunity to meet other outdoor enthusiasts, who may be just starting out or have experienced blazing trails, along the way. Planning active hikes during one’s vacation offers a different outlook than lounging by the pool or exploring local nightlife.

With an outdoor hobby that you are genuinely interested in, you will always have an excuse to get outside and breathe in the fresh air.

Make Outdoorsy Friends

It is said that you are who you spend time with, so take advantage of that by surrounding yourself with outdoorsy types. You could join an outdoorsy club that hikes, bikes, or surfs together, or you could reach out to the people you already know and ask if they want to get outdoors with you. The more you spend time with people who love nature, the more time you’ll actually spend in nature.

Go on More Walks

One of the simplest ways to become a more outdoorsy person is walking more. You don’t have to climb mountains or learn a new skill for this – you just need to put on your walking boots and walk to your heart’s desire. The best part is you can go at any level that suits you. If you can only manage thirty minutes of a light stroll, that’s OK. If you want to push yourself, though, then you can. If you often rely on your car and haven’t walked for a while, start by walking in your local park once or twice a week. Before long, you’ll look forward to those peaceful strolls.

Learn Basic Survival Skills

When spending more time outdoors, you should learn some basic survival skills, especially if you never learned them as a kid. Lessons like how to build a fire, how to make shelter, and how to tie a knot are all crucial. Those skills might just come in handy the next time you go for a hike or spend a couple of nights camping.

Choose Wilder Vacation Destinations

Another way to fit the outdoors into your vacation is by picking wilder destinations. If you usually opt for tourist-packed beaches or bustling cities, branch out by researching beautiful nature spots around the world and visiting those instead. You’ll get to explore the most amazing parts of the world and then go home with the best photographs!

Purchase Quality Gear

Entering the great outdoors is no joke, especially if you plan on heading up mountains or deep into forests. You need good, quality gear to help you every step of the way. Not only will this purchase encourage you to get outdoors, but you’ll also be more comfortable when you do so. Some good items to invest in include:

  • Navigation Gear
  • Sleeping Bag
  • Torch
  • Hydration Gear
  • Life Jacket
  • Hiking Boots

Get a Dog

While you should not get a dog solely to become more outdoorsy, a dog can help you get outside more if that’s your goal. That is because most dogs need walking every single day, so you will get to explore parks, woods, fields, and more with your furry friend. Your dog might even end up going on outdoor adventures with you to places further away from home!

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

Most importantly, to become an outdoorsy person, you need to step out of your comfort zone. Say yes to plans you wouldn’t usually, visit that destination that’s a little out of the way, and learn new skills that will prepare you for challenging situations. Being outdoorsy isn’t all about the fun of nature (although that is a part of it) – it’s also about pushing yourself further than ever before.
