Stop tooth decay – A basic guide

“While many of us love anything sweet and sugary, brushing twice in a day can sometimes be a hardcore especially doing those lazy days. However, understand that you can be placing a welcoming mat for tooth decay,” Zhang Minguan says.

Tooth decay occurs as a result of an infection on the teeth. When you consume foods such as bread, candy, cereals, or fruits. Bacterias in the mouth break down those foods and acid are formed in the process. All these combined to form plaques that attack the teeth enamel. This can lead to a hole in the teeth called cavities.

Unsurprisingly, tooth decay and cavities are one of the most common health problems in China affecting more than half of the population. With a whopping 95% of decayed teeth in DMFT for children, it’s no surprise a lot of parents are looking for ways to prevent this infection. Here, we ask expert,  Dr. Zhang Minguan–  a dental surgeon to provide expert tips on how to stop tooth decay. These tips will help you to kickstart a journey to better oral health while keeping your teeth and gums healthy for life.

Brush your teeth regularly

The best and simplest way of getting rid of plaques is to brush your teeth twice a day. Zhang Minguan says “Brushing after every meal or snacks is the most ideal way for oral care but unfortunately something we tend to ignore. If we cannot keep up to brushing after every meal, then rinse your mouth instead, with mouthwash to prevent tooth decay. Most importantly, never skip brushing your teeth before going to bed. Brushing can also stimulate the gums which helps prevent gum disease.

Use electric toothbrush

Many claim that an electric toothbrush is the perfect option for healthier gums and teeth as compared to manual toothbrushes. The good thing is there is a wide range of electric toothbrushes with plenty of designs and colours for people of all ages. Choose an age-appropriate one for cleaner, healthier teeth

Invest in the right toothpaste

While it is important to brush your teeth regularly, you want to do it the right way by using the right product. Toothpaste that contains at least 1,000 parts per million fluorides is the way to go. For kids, ensure you pick the right one that is safe for them to ingest. This is because kids find toothpaste as another candy due to the sweet taste and tend to swallow it while brushing.

Don’t forget to floss

Flossing is also an important part of the oral care routine that might help remove anything that is still hanging there after brushing. Any food, bacteria, or plaque that has built in-between your teeth needs to be gotten rid of to avoid tooth decay or cavities. Always floss at least once a day either in the morning or before going to bed.

Make dental visit a priority

Routine checkups are vital to keeping your oral health in good shape. Your dentist will be able to spot any potential problems you may not be aware of as early as possible and then provide the right tips or treatment. Your teeth, gum, and overall health will thank you when you make the dental visit a priority.   If you need a reputable recommendation, check out the dentist in Sherman now.

Eat your way to healthy teeth

What you eat also makes a huge impact on the appearance and health of your teeth. If you consume so many sugar-packed sodas and sweetened snacks or drinks, you can be at risk of tooth decay. If however, you opt for nutritious, balanced meals, the properties they contain can ensure optimum oral health.

“By adopting proper dental care and eating the right kind of food, tooth decay be prevented. Plus, your pearly teeth stay fresh, clean and healthy” Zhang Minguan concludes.
